Summary The Town of Marshville recently received a North Carolina Mobile Source Emission Reduction grant for the incremental cost of a light-duty hybrid vehicle. The hybrid replaced the town's older vehicle and displays a clean air message to increase awareness with local citizens.

Project Details

The Town of Marshville has purchased a 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid car to replace the 1996 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera assigned to Town Administrator Carl Webber. The Town was awarded a North Carolina Mobile Source Emission Reduction Grant to provide the incremental cost difference between the Civic and a “standard” engine 2006 Ford Taurus. Use of the Civic Hybrid will result in a decrease of 2.3 tons of Greenhouse Emissions per year. Assuming this vehicle will remain in service for 10 years the total anticipated reduction in Greenhouse Emissions is 23 tons. This represents a cost of $393.34 per ton of reduced emissions. ($9,047.00 divided by 23 tons). In addition to the immediate benefits to the environment, the use of such a vehicle by a local government will emphasize emission reduction efforts in rural Union County. Thanks to graphics on the side of the vehicle, it carries the message of increased fuel economy and decreased air pollution to all who view it.
