Fuel Economy/Hybrids

Each day, U.S. drivers consume millions of barrels of petroleum to fuel their more than 250 million vehicles. Improving fuel economy in U.S. automobiles and trucks can reduce petroleum use, making our country less dependent on foreign oil. It can also save drivers money at the fuel pump and limit emissions.

In addition to purchasing a more fuel efficient vehicle, such as a hybrid, drivers can improve their vehicle's fuel economy by: observing the speed limit, keeping tire inflated, performing regular services, planning and combining trips and avoiding excessive engine idling.

Our Hybrid Fleet

The Centralina Clean Fuels Coalition has begun to build our own hybrid vehicle fleet! The Clean Fuel and Advanced Technology (CFAT) grant program is focused on reducing transportation related emissions in NC counties that have air quality concerns, and utilizes funds from the NC State Energy Office and the NC Department of Transportation to support alternative fuel vehicles, refueling infrastructure, idle reduction technologies, heavy duty hybrid electric vehicles/buses and diesel retrofits. We recently purchased a Honda Civic Hybrid with the help of a CFAT grant.
